Minister's Visit to St. Mary's
Hello Everyone,
On February 17th , the Education Minister, Leona Dombrowsky, came to visit St. Mary's early learning program.
The Minister toured the newly equipped classrooms at St. Mary's school and spoke to the students in the early learning program. The students did a wonderful line dance presentation for the minister.
During her visit I had the opportunity to speak with some of the parents that had children in the program. The were very happy with early learning program and were eager to share the great progress that they saw in their children.
The board has announced that additional schools will be added next year. For more information please go to the board website www.dpcdsb.org/cec.

Father Sullivan Public Speaking Contest
Hello Everyone,
February was a very busy month. There have been many events happening at the schools and I have been busily trying to attend as many as possible.
On Friday March 4th, I had the privilege of judging the public speaking contest at Father Sullivan. Myself, along with two other individuals, Rony Geedah an English teacher from Cardinal Leger and Teresa Jones a parent from the School Council at Father Sullivan, were asked to participate in this event.
Ten students in all competed in this school final competition. They were Adry Rodrigues, Lauren Gabor, Andrew Farrugia, Roisin Fox, Samantha Iskerski, Nathan Alexander, Zachary Pinto-Lobo, Nicole Gendron, Siera Campbell and Kayla Cunanan.
Six students, two from each grade, four, five and six class competed for the junior public speaking contest title and four students, two from each grade seven and eight class competed for the intermediate public speaking title.
All of the students did extremely well. I was very impressed with the topics that were chosen. They were informative, well researched and of great interest. All the students spoke in an articulate and expressive manner and were engaging and elegant in their presentations.
Unfortunately, only two could be chosen. The winner of the junior title was a grade 4 boy by the name of Adry Rodrigues whose speech was on the Ice Age. Adry engaged the audience right from the start. He commanded attention by speaking loudly, being expressive, and engaging the listener. He made you feel like you were right in the Ice Age. Congratulations to Adry
The winner of the Intermediate title was Nicole Gendron whose speech was about Dr. Seuss. Nicole wowed the audience with a clever rendition of her speech. Not only did she tell us about Dr. Seuss's life story, she told it to us in rhyme.
Like Adry, Nicole spoke loudly and clearly, and engaged her audience from the start. I think that Nicole has demonstrated that she is a talented poet as well as a good public speaker. Congratulations to Nicole.
The students in the audience had a wonderful time - they laughed and cheered on their classmates. They were extremely well behaved and attentive. Everyone had a great time.
I want to thank Mrs. Sturge, the principal of Father Sullivan, as well as the two teachers, Joanne McCarthy and Tanya Schultz, who worked diligently to make this event happen. I know that their efforts are much appreciated by the students and parents of the school.
Thank you for your hard work and dedication!
